   A power surge is an increase in voltage above the normal flow of electricity.  The standard voltage is 240 volts. When this voltage increases, your air conditioning equipment is at risk.  A power surge occurs when something causes the charge to increase. One of the causes is lightning.  Lightning can cause an extremely large power surge. It can hit an electrical line, travel underground or down a building.  It can boost, temporarily, electrical pressures by millions of volts.  

   Operation of high-power electrical devices like your air conditioning system or refrigerator can cause power surges.  When equipment like these turn on and off, components like the compressor or motor draw an increase in energy. This causes a quick demand for power which can upset the standard flow of voltage in your electrical system.    Surge protectors do not offer 100% protection from surges but can protect your equipment from every day spikes and surges that can wear your systems components down over time.
